Seasonal road closures at Pole Mountain will start on February 1st.

Pole Mountain Seasonal Road Closures Begin Feb. 1 to Protect Resources in Medicine Bow National Forest

Are you an outdoor enthusiast looking to explore the beautiful Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming? If so, you’ll want to take note of the annual seasonal road closures on the Pole Mountain unit that go into effect on February 1st. These closures are put in place to protect the resources in the forest and ensure that they remain pristine for future generations to enjoy.

The Pole Mountain unit, located between Laramie and Cheyenne, sees heavy year-round use from outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. To accommodate non-motorized public access during the closure period, three parking areas are available along Highway 210. These lots provide easy access to the forest for activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

If you’re planning to visit the popular Tie City parking lot and winter trailhead, be aware that parking may be limited. In the event that the lot is full, consider seeking access and parking at alternate locations such as Happy Jack or the I-80 rest area. Remember, parking along Highway 210 is not allowed.

The closure end date is flexible and dependent on weather and road conditions. District staff will monitor and evaluate conditions on Pole Mountain during late spring to determine when it is safe to reopen the roads. The seasonal closures are part of the Pole Mountain Travel Management project decision, aimed at reducing resource damage during snowmelt and wet conditions.

While the roads on Pole Mountain may be closed to motorized vehicles, the area is still open for non-motorized use. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or wildlife watching, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the forest during the closure period. Just remember to stay on designated routes and avoid traveling off-road to protect the fragile ecosystem.

If you witness any incidents of resource damage caused by unauthorized motorized vehicle use, you can report them to the Medicine Bow National Forest – Laramie Ranger District anonymous tip line at 307-745-2392. Your information can help protect the forest and ensure that it remains a pristine wilderness for all to enjoy.

For more information about the road closures on Pole Mountain or to report any incidents, contact the Laramie Ranger District at 307-745-2300. Stay informed and help preserve the beauty of the Medicine Bow National Forest for future generations to explore and enjoy.
