Safety Tips for Outdoor Adventures this Spring Break
Spring break is just around the corner, and if you’re planning on heading into the great outdoors for some adventure, it’s important to be prepared. Emergency crews in Portland have been busy with rescues around popular spots like Multnomah Falls and Mount Hood, so it’s crucial to take some safety tips into consideration before you embark on your journey.
One key tip from Corbett FD Lt. Jasmine Zimmer-Stuckey is to have a travel first aid kit handy. This kit should include essentials like ibuprofen, band aids, medical tape, gloves, and an emergency blanket. It’s a basic kit that can be customized based on your destination and who you’re with.
Captain Jace Weber from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Station 64 emphasizes the importance of being ready and safe during your travels. TVF&R recommends five things to include in your travel checklist: a pre-trip vehicle inspection, packing medications and important documents, having an emergency roadside kit in your car, wearing safety gear like helmets and life jackets, and knowing emergency exits in new places.
When it comes to your emergency roadside kit, make sure to include items like flares, emergency triangles, jumper cables, tire-changing equipment, towing rope, flashlights, batteries, a power bank, emergency blankets, a first-aid kit, extra water, rain gear, and more. These items can come in handy in case of a breakdown or emergency situation.
Zimmer-Stuckey also stresses the importance of sturdy shoes and hiking poles, especially on steep trails in the Columbia River Gorge. Even experienced hikers can benefit from the extra stability provided by hiking poles. Additionally, paying attention to the weather, staying hydrated, and doing research ahead of time are all essential for a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure.
So, as you gear up for your spring break travels, remember to prioritize safety and preparedness. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or exploring new places, being proactive and equipped with the right tools can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip. Stay safe, have fun, and make the most of your outdoor adventures this spring break!
