Exploring Connemara: Top Hikes and Eateries to Savor in Ireland’s Emerald Isle
Are you ready to lace up your hiking boots and explore the rugged beauty of Connemara in Ireland? With the sun shining down on the Emerald Isle, now is the perfect time to hit the trails and soak in the stunning views. And what better way to reward yourself after a day of hiking than with some delicious local food?
Eoin Hamilton, Co-founder and CMO of HiiKER – a hiking app developed in Ireland, has shared his top tips on the best hikes in Connemara and where to find the best cafes and restaurants to refuel after your adventure.
One of the recommended hikes is the Búcán and Meall Cheo Loop, a 7.3 km trail with an elevation of 522m. The hike offers breathtaking views of the Killary fjord and ends with a steep descent back to the starting point. Afterward, treat yourself to some delicious food at The Misunderstood Herron, a food truck with a seasonal menu overlooking the Killary Fjord.
For a unique experience, try the Omey Island Loop Walk, a 14.5 km trail with an elevation of 124m. To reach the island, you’ll need to wait for low tide when a pathway appears for you to walk across. After your walk, head to Clifden and visit 12 Pins Coffee for a caffeine fix.
If you’re up for a challenge, tackle the Benlettery and Binn Gabhar loop, a 7 km trail with an elevation of 701m. The hike offers stunning views from the top, and afterwards, enjoy a meal at Ballynahinch Castle while taking in the scenery.
These are just a few of the amazing hikes and eateries you can explore in Connemara National Park. For more recommendations, check out the HiiKER app. And if you want to learn more about hiking tips and safety, listen to Eoin Hamilton’s interview with Jennifer Zamparelli on RTÉ 2FM.
